Correct tack coating is extremely important, not only in order to seal the existing surface against the entry of water and, but also to bond the wearing course to the base course. Inadequate bonding between layers can result in detachment, followed by longitudinal wheel path cracking, potholes and other distresses, such as rutting that greatly reduce the life of the pavement.
